Day 120 What’s Next | Mark 16:6-8

Day 120 What’s Next | Mark 16:6-8

Send us a text

The empty tomb stands at the center of Christian faith, yet Mark's gospel ends with a jarring cliffhanger that has puzzled readers for centuries. Women flee in fear and silence. There's no celebration, no appearances of the risen Christ. Just bewilderment and an angel's strange message.

This episode of Wisdom for the Day examines what scholars believe was Mark's original ending at verse 8 and why this abrupt conclusion might be exactly what we need. Far from being a literary failure, Mark's unresolved ending creates space for us to enter the story ourselves. We explore how the women's very human reaction—fear and silence—reflects our own struggles to comprehend divine mysteries without the Holy Spirit's help.

The resurrection isn't simply an event to observe from a distance but a living reality that demands our response. The angel's words that "Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee" offers a powerful metaphor for our spiritual journey. Christ always goes before us, preparing the way into new territories of faith and service. As we sit with Mark's uncomfortable ending, we're challenged to ask: How has the risen Jesus impacted my life? Where is he leading me next? Join us as we discover how this ancient text's unfinished quality might be its greatest gift to modern believers seeking to live in the continuing story of resurrection.

00:00:02.564 --> 00:00:07.394
Welcome to Wisdom for the Day, your daily source for spiritual refreshment and guidance.

00:00:07.394 --> 00:00:08.762
I'm Rick.

00:00:08.762 --> 00:00:13.653
Join me as I dive into God's Word to find clarity and strength for life's challenges.

00:00:13.653 --> 00:00:19.484
Let me help you embrace each day with faith and wisdom, ready to feel inspired.

00:00:19.484 --> 00:00:21.070
Let's get started.

00:00:21.070 --> 00:00:25.426
Today is day 120.

00:00:25.426 --> 00:00:26.791
What's next?

00:00:27.420 --> 00:00:30.830
From the Gospel of Mark, chapter 16, verses 6 through 8.

00:00:30.830 --> 00:00:37.164
From the New Living Translation but the angel said Don't be alarmed.

00:00:37.164 --> 00:00:41.209
You are here looking for Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified.

00:00:41.209 --> 00:00:42.612
He isn't here.

00:00:42.612 --> 00:00:44.621
He is risen from the dead.

00:00:44.621 --> 00:00:47.323
Look, this is where they laid his body.

00:00:47.323 --> 00:00:53.549
Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee.

00:00:53.549 --> 00:00:57.134
You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.

00:00:57.134 --> 00:01:06.444
The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened.

00:01:06.463 --> 00:01:10.052
The final verses of Mark's gospel are some of the most puzzling in the Bible.

00:01:10.052 --> 00:01:21.188
While many Bibles include additional verses after verse 8, most scholars agree that those endings were added later and aren't found in the earliest manuscripts.

00:01:21.188 --> 00:01:25.534
So we're left with rather I don't know an abrupt scene.

00:01:25.534 --> 00:01:31.451
The tomb is empty, the angel speaks and the women flee in fear and in silence.

00:01:31.451 --> 00:01:36.051
It's not the joyful, triumphant ending that we might expect.

00:01:36.051 --> 00:01:38.385
Where's the celebration?

00:01:38.385 --> 00:01:41.608
Where's the bold proclamation of the risen Lord?

00:01:42.840 --> 00:01:45.149
Mark's ending doesn't wrap things up neatly.

00:01:45.149 --> 00:01:50.347
Instead, it leaves us sitting in shock and mystery.

00:01:50.347 --> 00:01:52.774
Of the first resurrection morning.

00:01:52.774 --> 00:02:06.873
The women are stunned, overwhelmed really, and without the help of the Holy Spirit who would be given weeks later, at Pentecost, their reaction was very human fear and silence.

00:02:06.873 --> 00:02:10.144
But maybe that's part of Mark's purpose.

00:02:10.144 --> 00:02:14.514
His gospel invites us into the continuing story.

00:02:15.539 --> 00:02:20.546
The resurrection isn't just an event to observe, it's a story to enter.

00:02:20.546 --> 00:02:27.355
Mark challenges us to ask ourselves what will I do with the news that Jesus has risen?

00:02:27.355 --> 00:02:30.082
How am I going to respond?

00:02:30.082 --> 00:02:36.074
The good news is that the risen Jesus keeps going ahead of us.

00:02:36.074 --> 00:02:41.473
Just like the angel said, and through the Holy Spirit, he now walks with us too.

00:02:41.473 --> 00:02:50.820
Now walks with us too.

00:02:50.841 --> 00:02:51.782
Today, I want you to take time to reflect.

00:02:51.782 --> 00:02:54.006
How has the risen Jesus impacted your life and where is he leading you next?

00:02:54.006 --> 00:02:55.908
Pray with me.

00:02:55.908 --> 00:03:02.264
Lord Jesus, thank you for meeting us in our fear, our questions and our awe.

00:03:02.264 --> 00:03:07.335
Help us to step forward in faith and follow you wherever you lead, amen.

00:03:07.335 --> 00:03:14.469
Well, that's all for today, but I'll be back tomorrow with more of God's Word.
